SDBC Weekly Update

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon.com? If so, it’s easy for you to help SDBC receive donations from Amazon to SDBC. Just use the “Amazon Smile” charitable process in your account. Amazon Smile funnels a small percentage of their eligible purchase revenue to SDBC if you activate Amazon Smile in your account and choose “San Diego Bicycle Club” as the beneficiary nonprofit.

Instead of logging in through "amazon.com" you log-in through “smile.amazon.com.” Very easy to use. It is EXACTLY the same shopping experience. Nothing changes except SDBC receives contributions from Amazon.

Monthly Skills
Training Clinic

Lee Driver--SDBC Life Member, longtime Development Ride Leader, and former SDBC racer, has graciously offered to lead a skills clinic on the first Saturday of every month open to all.

The skills session will be followed by a 20 to 40 mile ride led by a SDBC Ride Leader. The topics will vary each month tailored to the skill set of those in attendance. Examples of skills to be discussed include:

  • Proximity riding including touching/bumping
  • Hand positioning
  • Tire dusting
  • Riding a thrown chain back on
  • Effectively training with a heart rate monitor
  • Hill interval training
  • Isolated-leg exercises
  • Properly equipping your bike for flats and roadside repairs
  • Dressing for varying temperatures
  • Rules of the road
  • Steering/cornering/braking
  • Effective use of gears
  • And other topics brought up by the attendees.

Not all skills will be taught each month.  In case of rain, the clinic will be conducted the following week.

A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

San Diego Bicycle ClubSDCBC Logo

CVC 21202 is the often-misunderstood section of the vehicle code that requires bicyclists to "keep right", but has many exceptions at least one of which applies on most roads. But most people including most in law enforcement don't understand and appreciate the exceptions, and the effect is to encourage bicyclists to "keep right" often when it is unsafe to do so.

AB 697 has just been introduced to fix this. It is intended to create no change to legal rights and responsibilities. It is merely a rewording of existing law to eliminate the common misperception that bicycle riders are almost always required to ride at the right edge of the roadway. It is hoped that the CHP will support this bill, or some version of it, because without CHP support it is unlikely to pass.

Link to the bill:
leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml

Stay tuned.  We may all need to figure out who are legislators are to urge them to support this.
