A Note From The Bike Coalition Liaison

SDBC Logo Remember, SDBC membership includes membership in the San Diego County Bike Coalition which includes a number of benefits. See the new coalition website at http://sdbikecoalition.org.

Safety tip of the week: Don't get left crossed (when an oncoming motorist turns left in front of you, or into you)! Last week we talked about developing the habit to look back over your left shoulder whenever approaching any intersection, or driveway, and moving left out of the vulnerable edge position, to avoid getting right hooked. Well, guess what? The same practice helps avoid the left cross. Before they turn left, they’re looking for oncoming traffic - so be where they are looking, in the traffic lane, not at the road edge, especially if there is no other traffic in your direction.

Specal C-Ride Saturday, 4/4

San Diego Bicycle Club

Across the Angeles Mountains

Once in a while we organize "special" C-rides to target the mythical climbs of the region. In the past we've done such rides as Escondido to Palm Desert via Palomar, a double Mt Baldy, Laguna by Kitchen Creek, or most recently GWL with Honey Springs to Otay Lake. Those rides are generally longer (80+ miles) and obviously with more climbing than usual (7,000 to 12,000 ft).

Saturday Apr 4th we're going on a big loop across the Angeles mountains, going up 39 all the way (after a 10mi warm up along the foothills) and back down by Hwy 2. It's 103 miles with well over 10,000 ft. And most of the climbing is a straight shot, going from 500ft to 8000ft at the "saddle", the highest point on Hwy 2, in 35 miles! It's a tough climb, with sections up to 10%. But it's a magnificent climb, nicer than Baldy or Palomar in my opinion. And then it's pretty much all downhill after that!

Because it's in the middle of mountains, it's very important that anyone joining this ride be self sufficient mechanically as well as for food and water.

Route available on MapMyRide.com

If you're interested please contact me for more detailed information and instructions.

2015 Barrio Logan Grand Prix Race Director’s Report

SDBC

2015 Barrio Logan
Saturday, May 2

It’s that time of year again and planning and preparations for the 2015, 19th Annual Barrio Logan Grand Prix are in full swing! Currently we are working hard to ensure this year’s will stand up to if not surpass, it’s outstanding reputation as one of Southern California’s premier bicycle races! Again this year we will be the SCNCA Junior Criterium Championships and part of USA Cycling’s Road Development Race Series. Plus we will feature races for Elite Men and Women, Master’s and our always popular Kid’s Races! New this year we will be having a Bicycle Safety Rodeo and the Helmet Give away at Cesar Chavez Park on San Diego Bay!

Right now we are working feverishly on raising the $6000. Cash prize list committed to this year’s race. But we need your help! If you have any leads on someone or a business who you believe might like to sponsor the race (how about you???) please give me a call. Everyone loves a race with lots of “primes”, SDBC has over 400 members, if each member acquired just one prime, this year’s Barrio Logan Grand Prix could give out 400 prime prizes!!! Primes can be just about anything: gift certificates, dinners, clothing, services, bike parts, auto parts, gift cards, cash… let’s get creative!

Speaking of needing your help; it’s time to start signing up for one of the many race day volunteer positions. Positions available are in the areas of; registration, course set-up and tear-down, course marshalling, hospitality, expo area, equipment truck driver, etc.

So if you have any ideas on sponsorship, or you want to volunteer, please give me a call (619-239-4321) or you can reach me on the World Wide Web at: Ralph@mgeracing,com

Seeya at the races,
Ralph Elliott, 2015 BLGP Race Director

SDBC Logo SDBC 2015 Club Photo will be on June 13th!

Everyone in the photo should be wearing the new 2015 kit.

If you haven't ordered your kit yet, what are you waiting for? Not sure of your size? The Pactimo fit kit will be available to try on for sizing at the Club Night at UC Cyclery on Monday March 16.

Other Items Of Interest

The following items are not sponsored or endorsed by SDBC but may be of interest to the general membership.

Gordy Shields Memorial Ride

Join several local cycling clubs April 19th for the Second Annual Gordy Shields Memorial Ride.

April 20th is the date past city council woman, Donna Frye, declared as "Gordy Shields Day" in honor of all his work on the Bayshore Bikeway and resurfacing of Fiesta Island Perimeter Rd. It is also the anniversary of his birthday since his passing in June 2013.

To remember his advocacy for our cycling community we are planning a ride from Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Avenue near the Gordy Shields bridge in National City.

The route is about 35 miles. Arrive at 8:15 AM and be ready to roll at 8:30 AM. Route on MapMyRide. This is a fun ride at a conversational pace out around the Bayshore Bikeway to Coronado and back. We will help with issues as they may arise, but ask that you arrive with a mechanically sound bicycle and your own equipment to service any issues that could come up.

The SDBC Sunday Ride will be participating and will be leaving with everyone from Pepper Park - There will be no Sunday Ride leaving from UC Cyclery.
